But on the multi-core test, the Threadripper 1920X absolutely destroys last year's Core i7-6950X—which debuted at almost twice the 1920X's $799 price! Really, though, aside from the eight-core Ryzen 7 1800X, all the results here were very close. In this test, we use a nice, big hunk of 4K video to see how the chips perform with a sustained task of this kind. Also, there's no denying that 12 cores is still wanton excess for many PC users. The 1950X outperforms Threadripper 1920X, suggesting this title scales with additional cores. Long gone are the times of taking days off (literally) for "rasterizing and rendering" of work flows. That Intel "Extreme Edition" chip debuted at almost $1,000 more than the 1920X less than a year ago when we wrote this, and it's now trailing well behind not AMD's best chip, but the company's second-best Threadripper offering. And on the plus side (albeit superficially), the retail packaging is unusually interesting. Several existing liquid coolers have been cleared by AMD to work with these chips. The short answer is probably, although the same caveats about Threadripper remain with this chip. Even then, the upcoming 18-core Core i9-7980XE has a suggested price of $2,000, twice that of the top Threadripper chip. But when we initially fired up the two test titles we use for CPU benchmarking (Far Cry Primal and Rise of the Tomb Raider) and ran them on the higher-end Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, we didn't see any worse performance than exhibited by the company's Ryzen 7 chips. On thread-hungry tests and tasks, the Ryzen 7 1800X and Core i7-7700K won't stand a chance against the 32-thread Threadripper 1950X or the 24-thread Threadripper 1920X. With the Ryzen 3, 5, and 7 chips, motherboard pricing has been another part of the value proposition, with X370, B350, and A320 boards generally coming in at either a lower price than Intel-based ones, or with more premium features (M.2 slots, LEDs, metal-wrapped PCIe x16 slots) than similarly priced Intel boards.
